Hospital insurance must meet the government’s reforms coming into effect by 1 April 2020 which set a standard for hospital cover in Australia. Before this date, health funds were able to choose which Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) items fit into their covers and which items made up their own categories. This was naturally confusing and made comparing different policies from different funds a more than a little ambiguous.
The good news is, if a product covers a certain category, then it must cover everything listed in it, not only some things.
Below we list all 38 clinical hospital categories and what types of services they include. RBHS’s Gold Hospital cover includes all of the services listed below. Just be aware that normal waiting periods apply.
Hospital treatment for fertility treatments or procedures.
For example: retrieval of eggs or sperm, In vitro Fertilisation (IVF), and Gamete Intra-fallopian Transfer (GIFT).

Hospital treatment for surgery to the teeth and gums. This covers hospital accommodation, theatre fees, anaesthetist fees and other medical fees.

Hospital insurance does not provide benefits towards surgical fees from your treating dentist or oral surgeon. Benefits towards these fees may be claimable from extras cover.
Hospital treatment for the investigation and management of diabetes.
For example: stabilisation of hypo- or hyper- glycaemia, contour problems due to insulin injections.
